In "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" book by J.R.R. during Council of Elrond in Rivendell the participants were debating what to do with One Ring. Finally they have decided that the Ring must be destroyed and in order to do so it needs to be cast into the fires of Orodruin (Mount Doom). The problem was that Mount Doom lay in the middle of Mordor - kingdom of Sauron. Sauron is rather not a nice guy. That's why Boromir said that "One does not simply walk into Mordor. It's black gates are guarded by more than just orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep. The great eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire, ash, and dust. The very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is folly." (quote taken from LotR movie - forgive me :P)
